The poet Shelley attended the execution and wrote an account of it. The scene is well described in a letter by J D Strutt to his uncle, later Lord Belper, Edward Strutt39 , in which he condemned the proceedings roundly. The Grand Jury in this case had on it such people as Lord George Cavendish, Henry Cavendish, Sir Robert Wilmot, Richard Arkwright and John Crompton40 . The latter two were both leaders of the textile industry in the Midlands and Sir Robert Wilmot was the owner of Osmaston Hall, which the Fox’s rented from 1814 until 1865.

Where did he struggle and where did he excel? What books was he reading? And what was the subject of general conversation at his parties? Perhaps it is unfair to ask of him to be another Samuel Pepys, yet what we do have is a wealth of original detail that we did not have before. 21 In fact, as mentioned above, Darwin did not write about this until late in life in his Autobiography, which was published posthumously22 . One thing is clear from the Fox Diary, he was committed to natural history long before he met Darwin.

On at least one occasion, Fox with friends rode off illicitly to Newmarket to attend a race meeting19 . Fox kept detailed records of his expenditure, and so we find him giving regularly 1 shilling to a beggar, which is clearly code for one further activity, to which he did not want to own up. Nevertheless, the diary from 1824-1826 is a gem, not only in the context that it indicates what Darwin’s life was like broadly at Cambridge just three years later, but also as a factual account of the life of a fairly typical undergraduate of the time.
